Glaucoma – A Common Eye Problem
Glaucoma is the most common disease of eye after cataract. The condition is about three times as common among African Americans as among whites. Glaucoma poses an enormous public health problem. It accounts for 40% of blindness in Singapore.
Glaucoma occurs in one out of every 10,000 births in the USA and is usually diagnosed by the first year of life. Genetic inheritance is often a factor in the occurrence of glaucoma. Glaucoma may be inherited. However, if someone in your family has glaucoma, you will not necessarily develop the disease.
Glaucoma & Eye Test
Vision educators entirely endorse the practice of regular testing and examination by qualified optometrists, particularly if there is a family history of glaucoma or other pre-disposing factors.
Eye checks are particularly important if you are in any of the ‘at risk’ groups listed above. The eye check will detect early signs of glaucoma before any significant vision loss occurs.
Testing for glaucoma is simple, quick and painless. The best way to detect the disease is through comprehensive eye examinations on a regular basis, including checking sight at various distances, testing the fluid pressure in the eyes, inspecting the optic nerve for signs of damage, and, if necessary, measuring visual field to determine if any peripheral vision has been lost.
