Eating Well to Prevent Myopia

Eating is wonderful, eating healthy is even better no matter what reason we’re doing it for. We’re talking about healthy eating for better vision.  Hold on a second, don’t get up and walk away yet.  We’re not talking about tofu and bean sprouts.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses for near-sightedness (myopia), then you know what a pain in the butt they can be. So if someone were to tell you that you could throw the darn things away and never have to wear them again just by eating certain foods, would you do it? Most people would, unless they think their designer glasses that cost $900 make them look cool.

So, what kind of foods do we eat? We eat lots of fruits and vegetables, especially yellow and orange ones which contain a lot of beta-carotene.  Chicken, fish and all types of beans provide high quality protein.  Whole grains such as, whole wheat bread and pasta with no added sugar keeps our insulin level steady.
A diet high in refined sugars and starches causes spikes in insulin and glucose which raises havoc with our blood vessels. We know that diabetics have poor eyesight; myopia (shortsightedness), long-sightedness, cataract, glaucoma and many even lose their sight entirely, and the blood glucose level is the culprit.

The bottom line is, if eating healthy sounds yucky, think about what you would rather do, eat a healthy meal or suffer from poor eyesight and your myopia.
